The congenital or acquired heart diseases, once considered incompatible with life, have been either preventable or correctable, so that the patient leads a normal life.

The advance in the methods of investigations of heart diseases starting from conventional E.C.G to Holter tests, U.S.G , coronary angiography or cinoagiography have contributed a lot in the management of heart and arterial diseases .The indroduction of coronary care unitr(CCU) and intesive care unite (ICU) in the hospitals have been a great help in the development of surgical services.

The specialised nursing care and the various biochemical tests have also contributed in the above developments.

The child born with allots tetralogy producing a blue child are corrected by open heart surgery either in one stage or two stages.

The acquired heart diseases like constrictive pericarditis (through very rare these days), mitral stenosis could be prevented or treatment.

The advance in the surgery management of coronary arterial diseases like bypass or billon dilation of the stenosed segment or methods of myocardial revascularization have improved the outlook of the cases of ischemic heart diseases.

Chronic constrictive pericarditis(picks diseases)

The pleura is thickened and calcified at place. The heart is contained in a thickened pericardial cavity, interfering with the diastolic filling and the systolic emptying of the heart.

This condition is mostly due to tuberculosis in our country. It could also be the result of auto-immune collagen diseases.

The other causes being traumatric heamopericardium , infective pericarditis or irradiation of the throrax(for carcinoma of the hungs)

Symptoms and signs


  • Dyspnea and exertion.
  • Bilateral pitting edema feet, sacrum .
  • Pleural effusion.
  • E.C.G low voltage QRS complex with flat T wave.
  • Engorged jugular veins on both the sides.
  • X-ray of the chest may show narrowed small heart, calcified pericardium.

Pericardiectomy or excision of the thickened pericardium , taking care to preserve the phrenic nerves.
